Cardboard ghost full of treasures
A big ghost cut out of cardboard, then covered in everything shiny lying around: sequins, buttons, scraps of wool. One each, and never two the same.
Age : age 3+; the grown-up cuts the cardboard
Materials
- A piece of packaging cardboard : The side of a cereal box or something thicker.
- White paint : Or white paper to glue on.
- Sequins, buttons, stickers, scraps of wool, beads : Whatever the treasure box has to offer.
- Thick white PVA glue
- A black marker or two big black buttons : For the eyes.
- A craft knife or good scissors, for the grown-up
Steps
Make the ghost
- Draw a big ghost shape on the cardboard: round head, two arms going “boo”, wavy bottom.
- The grown-up cuts it out.
- Paint it white and leave to dry.
Decorate
- Stick on two big eyes (black buttons or drawn) and a mouth.
- Spread glue over a small patch, not the whole ghost at once.
- Place the sequins, buttons and beads one by one: in patterns, in a rainbow, or any old how.
- Glue a few bits of wool along the bottom to make a fringe.
- Leave to dry flat, then make a hole at the top to hang it, or tape a stick on the back to make a puppet.
Same idea for an orange pumpkin decorated with green buttons, or a black cat covered in silver sequins.
If it goes wrong
- The sequins slide off : Wait a minute for the glue to thicken before placing them.
- The paint makes the cardboard warp : A thin coat, or glue on white paper instead.
Safety
- Sequins, buttons and beads can be swallowed: if there are under-3s in the house, a grown-up tidies everything away after the activity.
