Cardboard roll bats
A toilet roll painted black, two paper wings and round eyes: a colony of bats to hang up for Halloween.
Age : age 4+
Materials
- Empty toilet rolls : One per bat.
- Black paint (or purple, green: colourful bats work too)
- Black paper or recycled card : For the wings.
- White paper and black marker : Or googly eyes.
- Glue and scissors
- String : To hang them upside down.
Steps
Make
- Paint the roll and leave it to dry.
- Fold the top of the roll inwards, one side then the other: it makes two little pointy ears.
- Fold a black sheet in half and draw half a wavy wing against the fold. Cut out: both wings are identical.
- Glue the wings to the back of the roll.
- Glue on two round eyes and draw a mouth with two little fangs.
- Poke two small holes at the bottom, thread string through, and hang the bat upside down.
Did you know? Bats sleep upside down and find their way in the dark using the echo of their calls. In France all species are protected: they eat thousands of mosquitoes a night.
Make several sizes with cut-down kitchen rolls: a whole family.
If it goes wrong
- Ears won't stay : A dot of glue inside the fold.
- Wings fall off : Tape on the back, or strong glue.
Safety
- A grown-up cuts out the wings for the littlest ones.
