Witch's hat

A cone of black paper, a wide brim cut from a disc, and golden stars: a real witch's or wizard's hat to wear on Halloween night.

Age : age 5+; the grown-up draws and cuts the brim

Materials

• 2 large sheets of thick black paper (A3 or bigger)
• A piece of string and a pencil : To draw a big arc like a compass.
• Scissors, tape, glue
• Gold paper, star stickers, orange or purple ribbon : To decorate.
• A tape measure : To measure round the head.

Steps

The cone

1. Measure round the child's head.
2. On the first sheet, from a corner, draw a big arc with the string held tight (about 35 to 40 cm radius).
3. Cut out this quarter circle and roll it into a cone: adjust so the opening fits round the head, plus 2 cm.
4. Tape and glue the cone.

The brim and decoration

1. Stand the cone on the second sheet and draw round its opening.
2. Draw a second circle 8 to 10 cm further out all round: that's the brim.
3. In the centre, draw a circle 2 cm smaller than the first, cut it out and snip little slits up to the first line: these are the tabs.
4. Slide the brim onto the cone, fold the tabs inside and glue them.
5. Decorate: ribbon round the base, stars, a golden moon.

Bent tip: pinch the top of the cone and fold it to one side — even more witchy.

If it goes wrong

• Hat falls over the eyes : Tighten the cone before gluing the brim.
• Brim is floppy : Back the brim with cardboard.

Safety

• No paper hats near a lit candle.
