Homemade scratch card

Bright wax crayon colours, a layer of black paint on top, then scratch: drawings appear in colour on the night sky.

Age : age 4+

Materials

• Thin white card without a plastic coating : Or an uncoated paper plate.
• Oil pastels / wax crayons : Bright colours.
• Black acrylic paint
• Washing-up liquid : 1 part to 2 parts paint.
• A wide brush
• A wooden stick or a cut-down skewer : Rounded tip for little ones.

Steps

Prepare the card

1. Cut a rectangle of card.
2. Colour the whole surface with the crayons, pressing hard: stripes, patches, rainbow.
3. Wipe off the crayon crumbs with a tissue.
4. Mix 2 parts black paint with 1 part washing-up liquid.
5. Brush one even coat over the whole card.
6. Leave to dry for 30 to 45 minutes.

Scratch

1. Draw by scratching with the stick: the colours appear.
2. Try fine lines, spirals, hatching, dots.
3. For Easter: decorated eggs; for Christmas: trees and stars.

Cut the card into an egg, tree or heart shape before painting: it makes a card to give.

If it goes wrong

• Paint won't stay on the crayon : Remake the mix with washing-up liquid.
• Scratches badly, clumps : A single thin coat.
• Colours don't show : Colour firmly, leaving no white.
• Card soaks up the crayon : Smooth card with no plastic film.

Safety

• Skewers cut with a rounded tip for younger children.
• Acrylic stains: wear an apron.
